What is Blockchain? The Technology Behind Crypto

A blockchain is a shared digital ledger — a record of transactions that is stored not in one place, but on thousands of computers at once. Its defining feature: once data is written, it is extraordinarily hard to alter. That property is why blockchains can support money, ownership and proofs without a central referee.

Blocks, hashes and the chain

Transactions are grouped into blocks. Each block contains a cryptographic fingerprint — a hash — of the previous block. Change anything in an old block and its hash changes, which breaks every block after it. To rewrite history, an attacker would have to rebuild the entire chain faster than the honest network — practically impossible on a large network.

Consensus: agreeing without a boss

Since no single party owns the ledger, the network needs a way to agree on what gets added. Proof of Work (used by Bitcoin) makes adding blocks expensive in energy; Proof of Stake (used by modern networks like Ethereum) makes validators put up capital that can be lost for cheating. Both align incentives so that honesty pays.

Public vs. private chains

Public blockchains are open to everyone — anyone can read the ledger, submit transactions or run a node. Private and consortium chains restrict participation and are used inside companies for auditability.

Beyond currency

  • Tokens — programmable assets built on top of a chain, from stablecoins to utility tokens like exchange and ecosystem tokens.
  • Transparency proofs — publishing events (for example, token burns) with transaction hashes so anyone can independently verify them.
  • Smart contracts — code that executes automatically when conditions are met, enabling decentralized applications.

The limits

Blockchains trade efficiency for trust: they are slower and more expensive than centralized databases, and immutability means mistakes are permanent too. The technology fits problems where neutral, verifiable record-keeping matters more than raw speed.
